The Holcomb Police Department has announced that Field Training Officer (FTO) Kayla Van Doren has been awarded the Medal of Merit in recognition of her exceptional courage and quick action during a life-threatening emergency on June 18, 2025.
At approximately 2 p.m. on June 18, FTO Van Doren responded to an industrial accident involving a 10-year-old boy who had become trapped beneath a heavily loaded flatbed trailer. Upon arrival, Van Doren immediately took control of the chaotic scene, assisting the child’s father in using a jack to relieve the pressure from the trailer.
Throughout the incident, she provided steady leadership and emotional support, helping keep both the injured child and his parents’ calm. Once the child was freed, Van Doren carried him to safety and remained by his side until emergency medical personnel arrived—ensuring he stayed conscious and comforted.
Her quick thinking, compassion, and composure in the face of a dangerous and distressing situation directly contributed to the positive outcome.
“FTO Van Doren’s actions embody the highest ideals of public service,” Holcomb Chief of Police Randy Ralston said. “We are proud to honor her with the Medal of Merit and thankful for her unwavering commitment to the Holcomb community.”
