GCHS takes second in WAC volleyball tourney

Perhaps it was fitting that when the final matches of the 2024 Western Athletic Conference volleyball championship ended late afternoon Saturday Garden City High School occupied the runner-up spot to unbeaten Great Bend. While Great Bend’s Panthers were going through the round-robin unbeaten with a hard-fought 4-0 mark, the Buffaloes, rival Dodge City and Hays all finished with 2-2 records while Liberal was held winless at 0-4.The tiebreaker formula utilized to determine second, third and fourth, was calculate each team’s number of sets won divided by the number of sets played and the Buffs finished 6-of-11 (.545) while Hays was next with 5-of-10 (.500) and Dodge City after with 5-of-11 (.454), allowing the Buffs to take second, Hays third and the Red Demons fourth. The irony of the entire day for GCHS Coach Trista Bailey’s team was that after losing to rival Dodge City in the opening match of the day, four hours later they were on the court taking on Great Bend with a golden opportunity to win the WAC title for the first time since 2020.Things didn’t look rosy for the Buffs as they lost to their rival Demons in another three-set heart-stopper (25-7, 20-25, 20-25).
