February is Love the Bus Month and Garden City Public Schools USD 457 along with other schools and communities across the country come together to honor the iconic yellow school bus and the dedicated drivers who transport millions of students safely each day.
The USD 457 Board of Education discussed an update to the 2026-27 school calendar during its regular meeting Monday.
There will be no school for Garden City Public Schools USD 457 on Friday, Jan. 31. Friday is a scheduled inservice for new teachers during the day.
The USD 457 Virtual Academy has recently announced its A-B honor roll for the fall semester of the 2024-25 school year. Students must complete at least five classes to qualify for the honor roll. The honor roll includes:
Garden City Mayor Roy Cessna, read a proclamation at Alta Brown Elementary School, 1110 E. Pine St., at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, declaring the week of Jan. 27-31, as Health Awareness Week in Garden City. The proclamation will urge all residents of Garden City to take advantage of the many wellness opportunities available during the week.
Terry McCarty has been selected at USD 457’s new superintendent.

The USD 457 Board of Education will be interviewing two candidates for the position of superintendent on Monday, Jan. 20. The meeting will start at 7:00 a.m. at Baron’s Steakhouse, 1911 E. Kansas Avenue, Garden City, Kansas. The formal interviews will be conducted in executive session pursuant to the non-elected personnel exception under the Kansas Open Meetings Act.
