November election could shift Kansas State Board of Education to the right

TOPEKA — The race for five seats on the Kansas State Board of Education could dramatically shift the board’s political makeup, which could reshape academic standards or the way schools approach social-emotional learning.Currently, four of the 10 board members — Michelle Dombrosky, Cathy Hopkins, Dennis Hershberger and Danny Zeck — are conservative Republicans who campaigned in recent elections against what they described as “woke” leanings in public schools.They spoke out against lessons on racism, sexuality and gender identity, as well as efforts to be more inclusive of trans kids.

FHSU secures NASA grants to boost training for western Kansas teachers

HAYS – Two new grants from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will fund the development of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educator workshops at Fort Hays State University.A grant submitted via NASA’s Kansas Space Grant Consortium by Paul Adams, dean of the College of Education, and Ann Noble, director of FHSU’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute (SMEI), will fund a LEGO Robotic workshop for Western Kansas teachers.

Kansas mental health ranking improves, but numbers for young people worsen

TOPEKA — Kansas ranked worst in the nation for mental illness prevalence and mental health care access in a 2023 report, but new data shows the state’s ranking significantly improved this year.An annual report from the national nonprofit Mental Health America examining the climate of mental health in the United States uses 15 benchmarks to evaluate states’ efforts to address the need for mental health services among youths and adults.
