With fall sports in full swing, the Garden City Telegram is beginning a new Athlete of the Week program, starting on Monday.An online voting contest will collect nominations of student athletes who has had outstanding accomplishments in their sport.
The Holcomb High School football team picked up another Great West Activities Conference victory Friday night in front of the home crowd.
Sometimes you have a night where almost everything goes right.Holcomb High School running back Korbin Johnson had that happen Friday night against Ulysses in the Longhorns’ home opener.Last week at Cimarron, the Longhorn junior rushed for 49 yards on eight carries.
They have grown up with their hand clutching a football since they could literally clutch a football.“I would say that we are definitely gonna be the first ones to tell each other if we need to fix something,” Holcomb High School senior quarterback Keegan Johnson said of his brother, Korbin.
CIMARRON – After a first week loss to their nemesis, Cheney, the Holcomb High School football team bounced back for a win Friday night at Cimarron, 34-13.Holcomb racked up 20 points in the opening quarter then seven more in the second, while its defense shut down Cimarron, to take a 27-0 lead into halftime.
CHENEY – The curse of playing in Cheney for Holcomb High School was in full effect Friday as the Longhorns fell to the Cardinals, 7-38, to open the 2024 season.Cheney scored 13 points in each of the first half quarters to take a 26-0 lead into halftime.
A pair of all-state and all-Great West Activities Conference (GWAC) selections from last season will be providing team leadership for the Holcomb High School Longhorns into a season of gridiron battles this year.Drayton Knoll, a 6-5, 310-pound senior, will be leading the Longhorns’ line.
With the start of a new fall sports season, the Holcomb High School volleyball squad is looking to build on last season and make a trip to the 3A state tournament.Head Coach Jennifer Barrett, starting her 14th year at the helm of the Longhorns, has the nucleus to improve on last season’s 25-11 team that finished as a sub-state runner up to Goodland.Halle Jones will be providing senior leadership on the court for the Longhorns this season.
