GCHS takes second in WAC volleyball tourney

Perhaps it was fitting that when the final matches of the 2024 Western Athletic Conference volleyball championship ended late afternoon Saturday Garden City High School occupied the runner-up spot to unbeaten Great Bend. While Great Bend’s Panthers were going through the round-robin unbeaten with a hard-fought 4-0 mark, the Buffaloes, rival Dodge City and Hays all finished with 2-2 records while Liberal was held winless at 0-4.The tiebreaker formula utilized to determine second, third and fourth, was calculate each team’s number of sets won divided by the number of sets played and the Buffs finished 6-of-11 (.545) while Hays was next with 5-of-10 (.500) and Dodge City after with 5-of-11 (.454), allowing the Buffs to take second, Hays third and the Red Demons fourth. The irony of the entire day for GCHS Coach Trista Bailey’s team was that after losing to rival Dodge City in the opening match of the day, four hours later they were on the court taking on Great Bend with a golden opportunity to win the WAC title for the first time since 2020.Things didn’t look rosy for the Buffs as they lost to their rival Demons in another three-set heart-stopper (25-7, 20-25, 20-25).

GCHS girls’ golf squad qualifies for 6A state

LIBERAL - It may not have been the best day on the golf course for the Garden City High School girls’ team, but it was still good enough for them to advance to next week’s Class 6A state tournament in Hutchinson.Just minutes before the first groups were tee off at mid-morning, the weather changed, temperatures were chilly and the wind switched to the northeast, wreaking havoc with almost all scores. On Tuesday, the Buffs shot their second highest score of the season, a 367, at Willow Tree Golf Course in Liberal, good enough for runner-up to Maize’s 334 and 10 shots ahead of the third-place Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes, which secured the third and final team qualifying spot.“We got off to a rough start when the wind picked up right from the start,” GCHS Head Coach Chris Duncan said.

Buffalo boys’ soccer finish WAC with loss to Hays

The biggest thing Garden City High School boys’ soccer coach Jose Vital wanted to accomplish in Thursday night’s concluding Western Athletic Conference match at home against Hays was to gain some momentum as the Class 6A postseason playoffs loom on the horizon. That’s what he wanted his Buffaloes, who have struggled offensively all season, to build on against the Indians at Buffalo Stadium.Once again, however, the Buffs came up a goal (or two) short in their bid for their fifth win of the season in a 3-2 loss to the Indians at Buffalo Stadium.
