National Threatened Species Day is celebrated on Sept. 7 in Australia. This marks the unfortunate passing, and subsequent extinction, of the last known Tasmanian Tiger in 1936. Now in Australia, this sad anniversary is a time to raise awareness about conserving threatened plant and animal species.

World Snake Day is celebrated annually on July 16.
One of the incredible things about working in the zoo field is that every zoo is home to its own unique assortment of species. Some of the most popular species, like lions and ring-tailed lemurs, are quite common in zoos, and can be seen in over a hundred animal care facilities across the United States. But others are much rarer, and often it is those rarer species that make a zoo unique.
