There were multiple reasons for all the smiles from the Garden City High School girls’ golf team at the end of Thursday’s home invitational at Southwind Golf and Dining.First, the Buffs zoomed past their two Western Athletic Conference opponents – Hays and Dodge City – to not only win the invitational by a whopping 42 strokes, but in the process completed a perfect 5-for-5 WAC schedule to finish with 25 points to complete the dethroning of four-time defending champ Hays. Then, sophomore Brooke Savolt put together her career best tournament score, shooting a sizzling 3-over-par 74 on the tough Southwind layout to win the individual medalist by two shots over Amelia Bowles of Atwood-Rawlins County (76).Additionally, for a little icing on the cake, Ailynn Anderson (85), Breckyn Lucas (93) and Megan Burr (98) -- sophomores all – finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the individual standings, respectively.
DERBY - Despite not claiming any individual or doubles titles at Thursday’s Class 6A regional in Derby, the rock-solid Garden City High School girls’ tennis finished second as a team with 19 points to Maize’s winning 21 points. At the same time, Coach Logan Bevis’ recently-crowned Western Athletic Conference champions qualified both singles players and the two doubles teams for next week’s 6A state at Harmon Tennis Complex in Prairie Village.“Qualifying all six was one of our primary goals all season,” Bevis said.
