Southeast prevails over GCHS boys in regional semis

WICHITA - In the final game of the regular season, the Garden City High School boys’ soccer team had scored three goals in a shutout of a good Wichita North squad.GCHS head coach Jose Vital had hoped that would provide an impetus and momentum for his hard-luck squad that had suffered through numerous one-goal losses during the 2024 campaign. When the Buffs headed to Wichita on Tuesday to face unbeaten but once-tied Wichita Southeast (15-0-1) in the Class 6A regional semifinals, Vital had every reason to think his team would be right in the mix of a potential upset. And with 20 minutes to play in regulation, GCHS and Golden Buffaloes were battling to a 0-0 standoff. But, in the final 19 minutes, the host Southeast squad scored twice and finished with that 2-0 advantage to bring the curtain down on perhaps one of the most frustrating and confounding seasons in recent history of the Buffs’ program. They finished the season with a 5-11-1 record, losing nine games by one goal, including two in overtime.
