
Buffalo boys’ XC runs to Springs meet title

LAWRENCE - Garden City High School’s Krista Linenberger sees the fall cross country season as a marathon and not a sprint.At the end of September, it means the season is at the mid-point of a grueling two-month campaign.
HAYS - On a nearly perfect September morning for running, Garden City High School’s boys’ cross country ran a nearly perfect race in claiming the team title at the Hays Invitational.The event was contested at the Ellis County Fairgrounds (site of the WAC Championship in October) and the Buffs found the 5-kilometer layout to their liking as they finished 1-2-3-4 and 6 to score 16 points, just one off the perfect score of 15.
HAYS – Meryeme Mai and Lucas Goasman lead the Garden City Community College cross country teams to top-five finishes over the weekend at the Tiger Open at Fort Hays State University at Hays.The women’s squad took second at the meet and took the top junior college spot.

GREAT BEND - Three top 10 finishers, led by senior Hayden Nemechek’s fourth-place finish, paced the Garden City Buffaloes’ boys’ cross country to the team title on Thursday at Great Bend’s Lake Barton Golf Course.It was the season opening meet for the Buffs and another senior, Cate Wiese, paced the girls’ squad to a third-place finish by placing sixth overall.Nemechek, the defending Western Athletic Conference champion and WAC Runner of the Year from 2023, clocked a 16:18.03 for his fourth-place finish as Southeast of Saline’s Brayden Walker won with a time of 16:08.58.Teammates Trevor Fry (16:37.76) and Taran Castro (16:44.06) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, as the Buffs totaled 53 points.
Every season during her two-plus decades of being the head girls’ and boys’ cross country coach, Garden City High School’s Krista Linenberger looks forward to the start of the fall campaign.Now entering her 22nd year at the program’s helm, and 26th overall (four years as an assistant to Randy Sleep), Linenberger eagerly awaits Thursday’s opening meet at Great Bend’s Lake Barton (9 a.m.
