HAYS - If everything was going to run according to form, the Garden City High School’ boys’ cross country team and the Great Bend girls were the favorites to capture, respectively, each school’s fourth straight Western Athletic Conference title on Thursday at Hays’ Ellis County Fairgrounds.That’s exactly what happened.
SALINA - The pattern by now is well established for the Garden City High School cross country teams.Hayden Nemechek, Trevor Fry, Taran Castro and Jayden Smith all finished among the top 10 runners in Saturday’s Salina Central Invitational at Bill Burke Park to lead the Buffs to the team title with 33 points.Meanwhile, senior Cate Wiese continued her weekly improvement in times and places as she took fourth overall with one of only four times under 20 minutes for the 5,000-meter run.Nemechek won the boys’ division with a time of 15:33.47 to nip Junction City’s Ethan Fontaine, who clocked in at 15:34.60.
