Buffaloes escape with win at Heights, 14-13

WICHITA - Sometimes, it is better to be late than never.Perhaps that is the way the Garden City High School football felt after waiting three-and-a-half hours to finish its Friday night football game on the road at Wichita Heights. The wait was more than worth it as the Buffs held Heights quarterback Zane Masterson short of the goal line on an attempted potential winning 2-point conversion with just 0:34 remaining to survive with a 14-13 triumph at Heights Stadium. The game came to a dramatic ending at 12:31 a.m.“It was certainly a strange night, and not the first time we’ve had an interruption to a game,” GCHS head coach Brian Hill said.

GCHS volleyball goes 5-0 to win Liberal Invite

LIBERAL - Saturday was the day that Garden City High School volleyball coach Trista Bailey thought might happen at some point during the 2024 season. After starting the season with a 4-6 record and dropping four matches that went the full three sets, the Buffs rolled to a 5-0 record in winning the Liberal Invitational. In doing so, they won four matches in straight sets and then defeated Western Athletic Conference rival Dodge City in a three-setter, losing the first set 16-25 before taking the Demons in the next two, 25-21 and 25-14.Earlier in the day, the Buffs swept Colby (25-23, 25-23), Hugoton (25-13, 25-13), Liberal (25-15, 25-18) and Meade (25-17, 25-13).“We didn’t have a ton of turnaround time between our tough losses on Thursday (going 1-2) and our first serve on Saturday,” Bailey said.

GCHS boys’ soccer ends in 1-1 tie with Liberal

The Garden City Buffaloes boys’ soccer team had finally returned home to its own stadium for the opening match of the 2024 Western Athletic Conference schedule against a highly-regarded Liberal Redskin squad.Thursday night’s matchup provided the Buffs with an opportunity to earn just their second win of the season after a brutal six-game, two Classic road trips to Wichita and Overland Park to open the season. But as is usually the case when the Buffs and Redskins meet, it was tense, tight and hard-fought battle that went 100 minutes before ending in a 1-1 tie at Buffalo Stadium. The tie left the Buffs with a 1-5-1 overall record and 0-0-1 in the WAC while Liberal, which had lost earlier in the week to Dodge City, 1-0, goes home with a 5-1-1 overall mark and 0-1-1 in the WAC.“A classic match, which seems like normal for us in the WAC,” GCHS Head Coach Jose Vital said.
