Ulysses’ Stepp named GCHS boys’ swimming coach

For most of her life, swimming has been a big part of her personal and professional career.From competitive swimming as a youth to club coaching and swimming administration, Aleisha Stepp has generated a comprehensive resume of the sport she grew up loving.Now, Stepp will have the opportunity for a new venture after being named recently as the new boys’ swimming coach at Garden City High School.

GCHS girls’ tennis rolls to own invite title

Saturday’s near-perfect weather conditions perhaps was a portend of how the Garden City High School girls’ tennis team was going to perform at its own invitational at the GCHS Tennis Complex.But it would be difficult to predict that the Buffs would get a first and second in singles and a second and third in doubles and roll off the courts with 181 points to easily outdistance runner-up Larned’s 147 points.Senior Danica Galia was the highlight among many highlights for GCHS Coach Logan Bevis and the Buffs as she had an unblemished 4-0 record that included defeating her junior teammate, Quincy Nanninga, 8-5, in the title match.She reached that championship battle in dominating fashion, dispatching Addi Gotts of Great Bend, 8-0; Zoe Rojas of Dodge City Red, 8-0, and Clarissa Sianuqui of Ulysses, 8-2.“It was a fitting end to her career,” Bevis said of his top singles player.

Buffalo football suffers injuries during loss to Hays

When Hays’ Ian McGuire broke free for a 16-yard touchdown run at the 9:09 mark of the second quarter, it not only snapped a scoreless battle with the Garden City High School, but it was a play that altered the remainder of the game.On that same TD run by McGuire, Garden City senior starting quarterback/safety Ethan Gomez suffered an injury that took him off the field in the medical vehicle and likely ended his final season on the gridiron.That was the assessment from head coach Brian Hill on Sunday, two days removed from what became a 41-8 loss to the Indians in the first Western Athletic Conference battle for both teams on Friday at Buffalo Stadium.“It was a major injury, that’s about all I can say,” Hill said.

GCHS boys’ soccer gets hard-fought win at Hays

HAYS - The 2024 soccer season has been anything but a walk in the park for the Garden City High School boys’ soccer team.Thursday was another example of just how close the Buffs have come but previously coming up short.This time, though, the Buffs got a winning goal with three minutes left in the first overtime against the Indians to produce a 2-1 victory.After six losses by one goal, including three in overtime and another three 1-0 losses, this time the Buffs found a way to prevail.
