GCHS girls’ golf wins WAC crown, home invite

There were multiple reasons for all the smiles from the Garden City High School girls’ golf team at the end of Thursday’s home invitational at Southwind Golf and Dining.First, the Buffs zoomed past their two Western Athletic Conference opponents – Hays and Dodge City – to not only win the invitational by a whopping 42 strokes, but in the process completed a perfect 5-for-5 WAC schedule to finish with 25 points to complete the dethroning of four-time defending champ Hays.Then, sophomore Brooke Savolt put together her career best tournament score, shooting a sizzling 3-over-par 74 on the tough Southwind layout to win the individual medalist by two shots over Amelia Bowles of Atwood-Rawlins County (76).Additionally, for a little icing on the cake, Ailynn Anderson (85), Breckyn Lucas (93) and Megan Burr (98) -- sophomores all – finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the individual standings, respectively.

GCHS girls’ tennis qualifies full team to 6A state

DERBY - Despite not claiming any individual or doubles titles at Thursday’s Class 6A regional in Derby, the rock-solid Garden City High School girls’ tennis finished second as a team with 19 points to Maize’s winning 21 points.At the same time, Coach Logan Bevis’ recently-crowned Western Athletic Conference champions qualified both singles players and the two doubles teams for next week’s 6A state at Harmon Tennis Complex in Prairie Village.“Qualifying all six was one of our primary goals all season,” Bevis said.

Another tough loss for Buffalo boys’ soccer

LIBERAL - It has been a season of tough luck, hard knocks and close matches for the Garden City Buffaloes’ boys’ soccer team.Tuesday night at Western Athletic Conference opponent Liberal was another example of how the 2024 season has gone for GCHS Coach Jose Vital and his team.This time, it was 2-0 setback to the Redskins after the teams had played to a 1-1 tie two weeks earlier in Garden City.

Road loss to Liberal extends struggles for Buffaloes

LIBERAL - With five minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of Friday night’s Western Athletic Conference road battle in Liberal between the Garden City High School and the host Redskins, it was a nail-biting 14-6 score in favor of the Redskins.However, in the next two minutes, 39 seconds, things went topsy-turvy for the Buffs which resulted in a 23-6 setback to their WAC for and thus extended the struggles that has beset this year’s squad as the Buffs fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the WAC.“I think the biggest takeaway is that we didn’t win the big moments,” GCHS head coach Brian Hill said.

GCHS girls’ golf places fourth at Manhattan Invite

MANHATTAN - It has been virtually the same throughout the fall 2024 season for the Garden City High School girls’ golf team and Monday was no exception at the Manhattan Invitational.A pair of sophomores (five of the aix on the varsity team are sophomoress) in Brooke Savolt and Ailynn Anderson led the team to a solid fourth-place finish at Stagg Hill Golf Course.Savolt tied for ninth individually with an 83 while Anderson garnered a tie for 16th with an 85 as the Buffs shot a four-player score of 359 to finish behind champion Manhattan (312), Olathe-East (350) and St.
