Scott City second at GWAC
Scott Community High School’s volleyball squad finished in second place Saturday in the Greater Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament at Goodland.
The host Cowboys won the round-robin tournament with a 6-0 record, and Ulysses finished in third place with a 3-3 record.
Scott City ended the day with a 4-2 record. The Beavers opened the day defeating Colby 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, then dropped a match to Goodland 25-19, 25-18. The Beavers then won a close three-set match to Ulysses 25-21, 18-25, 28-26 then defeated Cimarron 25-8, 25-16. Holcomb handed Scott City a loss 21-25, 25-17 and 22-25 before bouncing back for its last match and claiming a 19-25, 25-19, 25-11 victory over Hugoton.
Ulysses knocked off Cimarron to begin their tournament, 15-25, 25-15, 25-16 then defeated Hugoton 25-23, 24-26, 27-25. The Tigers then were defeated by Scott City 21-25, 25-18,26-28, and lost to Goodland 23-25, 21-25. Holcomb then gave Ulysses a loss 17-25, 17-25, but the Tigers bounced back to win their last match of the day against Colby 25-14, 25-23.
Hugoton finished fourth with a 3-3 record, Colby finished fifth with a 2-4 record. Holcomb placed sixth with a 2-4 record and Cimarron finished in seventh with a 1-5 record.
In the overall standings in the GWAC, Goodland won the volleyball championship with a 6-0 regular season record, while Hugoton finished second at 4-1. Holcomb claimed the third spot overall with a 4-2 record in the league.
