Garden City Police Department's Sgt. Lana Urteaga talks about a fatal shooting Wednesday during a media briefing at the Law Enforcement Center, 304 N. Ninth St.

One child was killed and a juvenile was critically injured in a pair of related shootings in Garden City Wednesday.

Sgt. Lana Urteaga of the Garden City Police Department reported that the shootings were the result of a domestic dispute at 1307 N. 12th St.

James Franco, 31, who resides at 1307 N. 12th St., was arrested on allegations of the crime and was taken into custody without incident.

The incident remains under investigation.

Urteaga reported that GCPD was alerted that a shooting had just occurred around 12:45 p.m. by the victim, a 16-year-old juvenile male, who was in the area of Abe Hubert Elementary School.

Officers were dispatched, the juvenile was found with a gunshot wound and was transported by the Finney County EMS to St. Catherine Hospital with critical injuries, Urteaga said. His condition is unknown.

While investigating the incident at Abe Hubert, GCPD received a call to 1307 N. 12th St., of an additional shooting at that location, Urteaga reported. Officers located a four-year-old girl with a gunshot wound upon arrival.

She was transported by Finney County EMS to St. Catherine Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Both shootings were the result of one incident, Urteaga said.

“The shooting, both subjects, is the result of one incident,” she said. “These are not two separate incidents. (Neither) the school nor USD 457 were involved in this.”
