Arboretum to be dedicated
The City of Garden City will be joined by the family of Tommy Austin to commemorate the completion of the Tommy Austin Arboretum with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the southwest corner of 5th Street and Kansas Avenue intersection. The dedication will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Austin touched numerous lives in and around Garden City. She was involved with many social service organizations, including 35 years as an advocate with the Family Crisis Center, a Red Cross volunteer, a past president of VFW Auxiliary, and past president of the African-American Coalition.
Her dedication to helping people was a life-long endeavor. Ms. Austin served on the City Commission, where she championed support for local social services and advocated for workplace improvements and benefits.
In light of Austin's selfless service to the citizens of Garden City and Southwest Kansas, the Park and Tree Advisory Board unanimously voted to dedicate and name the Kansas Avenue landscape project in her honor.
City Park Staff worked with Finney County GIS to create an interactive map that allows you to view information about each type of tree that has been planted in the Tommy Austin Arboretum.
