The Garden City High School boys basketball team's up-and-down season came to an end Wednesday night in the opening round of Class 6A sub-state.
Nick Bonner scored a game-high 15 points and Trent Parke added 12 as the Derby Panthers defeated the Buffaloes 68-40 at Derby.
Garden City started the game with a cold offensive performance, combined with the Panthers’ defensive pressure, to only score five points in the first quarter. The Buffaloes were out-gunned in the game as Derby racked up 21 points in the opening quarter, then led 35-14 at half, to cruise to the eventual victory.
The Buffaloes did break the 10-points in a quarter in the third and fourth, scoring 13 in each. But Derby sealed the game in the third with a 22-point barrage.
Azavier Williams, who scored 14 points in the contest, was the only Garden City player to reach double figures.
Garden City finishes the season with a 10-11 overall record. The Buffaloes had a 3-5 mark in Western Athletic Conference league play.
In other sub-state action Wednesday, the Ulysses boys basketball team ended its season, dropping a 74-66 contest at Rose Hill in Class 4A action.
