The 6A State swimming meet kicked off on Friday in Topeka at the Capitol Federal Natatorium, with Garden City High School having mixed results in the preliminaries.


Although the top finisher for the Buffaloes on the day was an 11th place finish, a majority of Garden City preliminary times were faster than their state qualifying times.


Here’s a break down of the Buffaloes preliminary events:


In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the GCHS team of Jerry Bunce, Devin Chappel, Connor Cupp and Nate Morren finished in 11th place with a time of 1:33.92.


The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Chappel, Bunce, Kobe Otero and Esai Morales swam for a time of 3:28.84, to finish the day in 13th.


Garden City’s other really team in the meet, the 200-yard medley, finished in 15th place with a time of 1:45.27. Otero, Lane Durst, Cupp and Bunce make up the team.


In the 200-yard freestyle, Chappel is in 22nd with a time of 1:53.63.


Bunce swam the 50-yard freestyle in 22.68 to finish in 14th place.


Otero finished in 30th place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.86.


In the 100-yard butterfly, Cupp swam the race in 55.49 for 13th. He also placed 26th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.48.


Chappel placed 27th in the 500-yard freestyle prelim with a time of 5:21.04.


In the 100-yard backstroke, Otero placed in 21st with a time of 58.24 while teammate Morales swam the event in 1:00.92 for 34th.


The state meet continued on Saturday with the finals.
