Nick Mason torched Buffalo Dunes Golf Course on Friday in the opening round of the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am.

Mason shot an 8-under 64 on the par-72 course, and sits in first by two strokes (from par) heading into Saturday’s second round. Playing on The Golf Club at Southwind (par 71), Trent Whitekiller is in second after a 65 on that course.

The 41-player field was split between the Dunes and Southwind on Friday, and the two groups switch courses on Saturday, with the final round being held at Southwind on Sunday.

Curtis Yonke sits in third alone at 5-under, posting a 67 at the Dunes Friday. Two golfers — Ryan Argotsinger and Dan Woltman — are tied for fourth at 2-under, and six are tied for sixth at 1-under.

Mason has twice been a runner-up at the Pro-Am, finishing second in both 2012 and 2013.

In 2012, he also opened with a 64, and was in the lead prior to the fourth and final round, during which he shot a 77 — in 2012, the Pro-Am was four rounds.

On Friday, Mason played bogey-free, carding birdies on six of the 10 par-4s, as well as both of the back nine par-5s. He will tee off at 1:15 p.m. on Southwind’s No. 1 on Saturday.

Of the amateur teams, each playing with a pro, it was the five-some of Grant Elpers, Craig Howell, Mike Howell, Kim Snook and Jim Snook who held the lead after Friday’s first round. They shot a combined 54, carding 15 birdies and an eagle at Southwind, sitting at 17-under and one shot ahead of two other teams.
