A late rally in Thursday’s Class 6A region fell short for the Garden City High School softball team in Topeka, as the Buffaloes lost to host Topeka, 8-4, ending their season.

The Buffs fell behind 8-0 early in the final, but a Kelbi Richter three-run triple in the fifth gave them some life. In the seventh, the Buffs got three on, and Lauren Koster drove in a run on an RBI single, but that’s all they could muster.

The Buffs (14-3) had routed Wichita South, 17-0, earlier in the day to reach the final.

Hailey Dart took the loss in the final, going six innings and giving up six hits and eight runs — just four earned — with seven strikeouts and five walks. The Trojans rallied off Dart in the second, racking up four hits including a pair of run-producing doubles to take an early 3-0 lead.

That was made 5-0 in the third and finally 8-0 in the fourth, before the Buffs’ failed rally.

Earlier in the day, it took just three innings for the Buffs to dispatch South, racking up 14 hits and seven walks — and Giselle Gutierrez tossed three scoreless innings to get the win.

Richter ended up with five RBIs in the win, going 2 for 2 with a triple. Koster, Jasmine Rockwell and Gutierrez all had two RBIs, as well.

The Buffs were without junior all-state shortstop and pitcher Yaz Vargas, who was suspended for a violation of team rules.
