Elier Arreola was solid on the mound, and the Garden City Buffaloes racked up seven hits on offense, but they left seven on base in a 5-2 loss to Maize South on Friday evening in the Emporia tournament.
Arreola went six innings and gave up six hits, five runs — three earned — and two walks, while striking out one. But the Buffs (11-8) only managed to score two runs in the fourth, on Cooper Thayer’s RBI double and then on a wild pitch later in the inning, before leaving at least one runner on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
At the time, the two runs in the fourth drew the Buffs even at 2, before Maize South scored one in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout. The Mavericks then added two more in the sixth on another RBI groundout and then an RBI single.
Brayden McPheeters took the win for Maize South, going 5 ⅓, giving up six hits, two walks and two runs, while striking out five. Jayce Meyer and Dylen Epke combined to close out the final 1 ⅔ scoreless innings.
The Buffs now face host Emporia at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to close out the regular season.
