Connor Cupp won both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke in Thursday’s Great Bend boys swimming invite, leading the short-handed Garden City High School squad.
The Buffaloes were without five of their top swimmers, head coach Brian Watkins said, leaving their depth a little shallower than usual.
Cupp made sure there were still highlights, hitting Class 6A state consideration times, just seconds short of qualifying times. In the 100 butterfly, Cupp finished in 58.79 seconds (qualifying standard is 57.58) and recorded a 1:01.92 in the 100 back (1:00.33 QS).
Jerry Bunce also took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.21) and third in the 50 free (25.14), while Dominic Comb was third in the 200 free, with a time of 2:19.86. Watkins said it was Combs’ first time swimming the event.
“Winter Break is always a tough time to swim but we still managed to cut 88 seconds as a team and some kids stepped up to take over some varsity spots on the roster,” Watkins said.
The Buffs’ next action comes in Wichita on Jan. 12.
