Although the Garden City Broncbusters women’s basketball team made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, holding the Cowley County Tiger’s high-powered offense to six points, it was too little too late as the Tigers (11-2) had done enough before that to hold off the Busters, 61-54, Saturday night in Arkansas City.

Garden City (6-6) started well enough, scoring 14 in the opening quarter and holding the Tigers to 12 to take a two-point lead into the second quarter. Unfortunately for the Busters, that is when Cowley County came alive and took command of the game. During the middle two quarters, the Tigers outscored the Busters 41-24, opening up a 63-38 lead.

Cowley County sophomore Brenda Da Silva was the force behind the comeback, scoring a game-leading 18 points on 50 percent shooting.

The usually reliable sophomore, Talia Roberts was held to only four points, going 1-13 from the field. Freshman Jaleah Bellany scored a Buster high 13 points from the bench, and Alyssa Boyce had 12 points.

Garden City had a rough night shooting, going 20 of 65 (30 percent), well below its season average of 38 percent.

The loss snapped the Busters’ two-game winning streak and drops them back to .500 for the season.

This is the first of back-to-back road games as the Busters will now travel to Coffeyville to take on the Red Ravens Wednesday night. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
