The rough season continues for the Garden City Broncbuster volleyball team, as they are still in search of their first win of the season, dropping Wednesday’s match to the rival Dodge City Conquistadors 15-25, 9-25, 25-22, 25-15, at Conestoga Arena in Garden City.

“We had a slow start, and it killed us in the end,” head coach Casie Lowden said of her team’s performance on Wednesday as it dropped to 0-16 overall and 0-5 in the KJCCC.

The slow start was visible during the first two sets of the match. The Busters were unable to overcome the Conquistadors’ (2-15) fast starts to the sets, which put the Busters behind early.

The third set was a different story for the Busters as they opened up with a lead and never trailed for the rest of the set. Towards the end of the set, however, Garden City was tied with Dodge City at 20, but the Busters closed out the Conqs with a 5-2 rally.

“That third set is one of the best sets I’ve seen from the girls in a long time,” Lowden said. “We had a lot of fight and a lot of effort, which carried over into the fourth set. It was just a little too late. Dodge had a little bit more momentum than we did.”

When asked what the difference was in the third set compared to the opening two sets, Lowden knew her team played as one.

“We finally made a choice to come together and play together,” Lowden said. “We started going after balls that we weren't going for in the first and second set. A lot of our success comes from our overall effort on defense.”

While in the midst of a tough season, in which the Busters are suffering from reduced scholarships due to KJCCC sanctions, Lowden knows you have to take the bright spots and build on those to help get the team better.

“We have to wash the negatives, and we have to focus on the positive,” she said. “So if we take every positive thing that we did from this game, that’s a good thing — every positive thing we did from last week’s game and practice, every single thing that we do positive and hold on to and bring onto the next game, will help us in the next game.”

Their next matches are scheduled for Saturday against both Lamar Community College and Clarendon College, in Clarendon, Texas. The Broncbusters' first match is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
