Five days after the abrupt resignation of Garden City Community College cheerleading coach Brice Knapp, it is unknown who will be taking the cheerleading team to the National Cheer Association’s College Nationals.
The competition is set for Wednesday through Saturday, and the GCCC cheer team is scheduled to leave Tuesday morning for Daytona Beach, Fla.
GCCC Director of Public Relations Kristi Tempel confirmed Monday that the cheerleading team would still be competing in the event, despite the resignation of Knapp Thursday.
When asked via text message Monday who will be the athletic department representative taking the team to the competition, Tempel said, “We are off today (Monday) for Easter break, so I don’t know.”
The college has not responded to inquiries as to why Knapp resigned.
Knapp has not returned multiple phone calls seeking comment.
On Monday, GCCC President Herb Swender declined to comment on the reason for Knapp's resignation.
“It’s a personnel issue,” he said. “We’re not going to give reasons. Those are confidential.”
GCCC Athletic Director John Green also has not returned calls seeking comment.
Knapp, who previously had coached the cheer squad at Hutchinson Community College, was hired by GCCC in April 2014.
