On the same course that he won the 2017 Class 6A state championship in mid-May, Garden City High School junior Sion Audrain shot a 5-over-par 76, tying for first place but losing on a scorecard playoff Monday at Auburn Hills Golf Course in Wichita at the Bishop Carroll Invitational.

Audrain, playing in his first tournament for the Buffs are missing Saturday’s GCHS Invitational to compete in an Arkansas AJGA tournament, shot steady rounds of 38-38 en route to his 76.

He tied with Salina-Sacred Heart’s Grant Herrenbruck, who shot 35-41 en route to his 76.

The Buffs, meanwhile, placed third in a field of 12 schools, shooting a 338. Sacred Heart, the defending Class 2A state champions when played at The Golf Club at Southwind last year, shot a 316 while Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel was second at 320.

Aaron Schafer was next for the Buffs with an 86 (43-43), followed by Tyler Morren at 87 (43-44) and Mason Shaddix with an 89 (43-46). Non-counting scores were 97s by Reid Richmeier (47-50) and Kyle Doll (49-48).

“It was a tough day to play, with cold temperatures and windy conditions,” GCHS head coach Jacob Waller said.

The Buffs will have two weeks off to prepare for the April 16 Western Athletic Conference tournament at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays.
