Garden City Community College’s defense locked down the Otero, Colo., Junior College Rattlers on Tuesday night to lead the way to a 60-33 win to end the 2017 schedule for the Lady Broncbusters.
The Busters held the host Rattlers to just 13 of 52 from the field (25 percent) and 3 of 16 from deep, while allowing a season-best 33 points.
“We did an exceptional job defending their cuts,” head coach Charinee Mitchell said. “We had three slip ups the entire night.”
Offensively, the “patient” Busters (7-6) were led by Abi Green, who scored a game-high 16 points, while chipping in four rebounds, three assists and four steals. Talia Roberts had 13 points off the bench, going 5 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 4 from deep. The Busters hit 7 of their 14 three-pointer attempts against a packed in Otero defense.
“Patient — we had to be,” Mitchell said. “The defense was so packed in the paint, we had to run our plays completely through and find reads.”
But the defense kept Otero at an arm’s length all night, with the Busters leading 24-11 at halftime. No Rattler scored in double digits, with Alyssa Lovato leading Otero with nine on 3-of-10 shooting.
The Busters return to action on Jan. 3, 2018, after the December break, at Coffeyville.
