Three Garden City High School wrestlers advanced to the finals of the Ulysses Invitational with a pair of wins in their respective weight divisions Friday.
The finals will be Saturday afternoon at the UHS gymnasium.
Reaching the finals were sophomore Diago Hernandez at 113 pounds, freshman Josh Janas at 126 pounds and senior Curtis Near at 152 pounds.
A pair of Buffs lost their semifinal matches — Kaj Perez at 132 pounds and Malachi Salas at 138 pounds.
Perez and Near are the only two who are on the current varsity squad.
A split squad also will be competing Saturday at Palmer Ridge, Colo., where the bulk of the varsity wrestlers will be on the mat.
"I'd grade out our day at about a B-," said Carlos Prieto, GCHS head coach. "We've definitely got some work to do. Our better kids need to start doing better. We're still trying to get in shape, but that will come."
Following Saturday, the Buffs have next week to prepare for the tough Kansas City Stampede, which will get under way on Friday in Kansas City, Mo. That will be the final competition before the holiday break.
