Why is Kanye West running president?
The rapper and fashion designer is only legally on the ballot in Oklahoma and has already missed his opportunity to get on the ballot in some key states. Essentially his chances of winning at this juncture might be theoretically possible but not statistically probable. It’s clear he is not a viable candidate and should not be treated as such.
His presidential website only has a petition to place him on the ballot in South Carolina.
Speaking of South Carolina, the campaign rally he held there on July 19 left us with more questions than answers. He made controversial statements about abolitionist Harriet Tubman and abortion. Even going as far as to share comments about his oldest daughter.
In a July 8 interview with Forbes, West said he was running under "The Birthday Party" with help from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. He also said he’s never voted in his life and that he planned to structure his White House like the Wakandans of Marvel’s Black Panther comics.
From the outside looking in, he appears to be a man in crisis.
He has publicly commented about having bipolar disorder in the past. While we don’t feel comfortable speculating on his condition we do hope he gets some help if that is truly the case.
He recently appeared with his wife, reality TV star Kim Kardashian. The two were photographed having an emotional conversation. We don’t know where that’s headed, but he publicly apologized to her on Twitter for his actions.
If this was a mental health episode Kanye deserves some empathy. He had a public episode — he has an established history of these episodes even. This one however, impacted his family including young children. At very least, the situation requires some sensitivity.
Is it fair to criticize him, though? It seems pretty situational. He is a celebrity. He knows what he signed up for. So did his wife. Their children, however, did not. If you want to question his motives for running, that seems fair game.
If you want to critique some of his more absurd or factually incorrect statements, that’s cool, too. But we don’t need to pile on about his struggles with mental health or his family life. Especially at the moment.
So we’re still very unsure why he’s running for president. Perhaps only Kanye West can answer that question. Seems pretty on brand for Kanye, too.
