ULYSSES - Ethel May Smith, age 85, died Jan. 17, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Independence, KS. She was born Sept. 21, 1935, in Hennessey, OK, the daughter of Carl B. and Viola May (Thrasher) Spencer. Ethel graduated from Grant County Rural High School. She married Henry Raymond (Hank) Smith on March 23, 1952, in Clayton, NM. Ethel farmed with her husband.
Ethel is survived by her children, Karen Hampton of Ulysses, KS, Henry Smith Jr. of Independence, KS, Kathy Patton of Grove, OK, Kayla Bridwell of Independence, KS, and Kim Smith of Garden City, KS; sister, Patsy Harp of Springdale, AR; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Ethel is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hank in 2003; sister, Gladys Harp.
A private funeral service will be Jan. 21, 2021, at 10 a.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, KS. The public is invited to join the family at Ulysses Cemetery for the interment following the funeral service. The service may also be viewed on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Live. Visitation was Jan. 20, 2021, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel.
