ULYSSES - Emilio Mendoza Arrieta, age 89, died Jan. 18, 2021, at his home in Ulysses, KS. He was born February 11, 1931, in Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Simon and Dolores (Arrieta) Mendoza. Emilio grew up in Mexico. He married Soledad Flores on Jan. 29, 1958, in Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico. While living in Guthrie, OK, Emilio took care of horses. His family moved to Ulysses, KS, over 20 years ago. He was a night watchman for Patrick Well Service, worked at grain elevators, dairies, and farmed. Emilio enjoyed gardening, making trips to Mexico, going on walks, listening to music, and playing dominoes. He loved being with his grandkids. Emilio always considered it a special treat when going to the Sonic for ice cream.
Emilio is survived by his daughters, Abilia Mendoza of Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico, Armida Mendoza of Ulysses, KS, Socorro Lara of Sweet Water, Texas, and Esperanza Porras of Ulysses, KS; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Emilio is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Soledad in 2018; and six siblings.
Vigil and Rosary Service will be Jan. 21, 2021, at 7 p.m. and Funeral Mass will be Jan. 22, 2021, at 2 p.m. both at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, KS. Funeral mass may also be viewed live on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Page. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation is Jan. 21, 2021, from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses, KS.
