BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Sharen L. Siegel, 78, died Dec. 16, 2020, at her home in Bridgewater, NJ, with her loving family around her.
Mrs. Siegel was born Aug. 31, 1942, to Claude and Thelma Harkness in Garden City, KS. She grew up in a farming family in the 1950’s, graduated high school with the class of 1960, and she briefly attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque; a time that sparked a lifelong love for “The Land of Enchantment.” In the early 1960’s, she moved to Montana where she met and married Robert Shelden, her first husband. Sharen and Robert later moved to Minnesota, and Ohio before finally settling in New Jersey. They shared three children: Merris, Stephan Daniel, and Chris. Sharen and Robert parted ways in the early 1980’s and a few years later, Sharen met Peter Katz, her second partner. They were together for several years, and Sharen’s family grew to include Jennifer and Sarah, Peter’s daughters. In 1998, Sharen met Harold Siegel and they married at her family’s home in the Colorado mountains. Harold’s sons, Matthew, Paul, and Scott blended into the larger family. Over the years, their family has continued to grow, and Sharen and Harold share nine cherished grandchildren. Sharen and Harold shared a love of New Mexico that led them to make a second home in Las Cruces, NM. From there, they had many adventures together exploring the beauty of the desert southwest.
In early 2020, Sharen was diagnosed with cancer. Initial treatment showed positive results, but unfortunately the cancer was just too aggressive. Sharen took advantage of her last year to reach out to friends and family and share memories and messages of love. She is also survived by her brothers Errol and Gregory Kim Harkness.
Sharen requested that in lieu of flowers, friends and family consider contributing to one of her favorite charities: American Cancer Society, Navajo Nation, AMFAR, or the National Park Service.
