Obituary

Shirley I. Wheeler, age 82, died on November 29, 2020 at her home in Garden City, KS. She was born on Oct. 15, 1938 in Wichita, KS. She was raised by her grandparents, Sam and Louella Noonan, and grew up in Byers, KS, and finished her schooling in Pratt, KS. She married W. Wayne Wheeler on June 20, 1964.

Shirley earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University. In 1972 they moved to Holcomb where she taught for three years. She became a real estate broker and was an agent for several years. In 1987 she became the Education Specialist for the Kansas Real Estate Commission in Topeka for two years. After completing that job, she was a substitute teacher in Holcomb, KS, for many years. She was a Past President of the Garden City Board of Realtors and was a toastmaster for many events. She enjoyed gardening and was a Certified Master Gardener. She also enjoyed taking photos, knitting, cross stitching and was an avid reader.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Wheeler; four daughters, LoWaine (John) Robison of Wichita, KS, Carmen (Jim) Pinegar of Mount Hope, KS, Linda (Lonnie) Edwards of Ingalls, KS and Shonda (Jeff) Collins of Garden City, KS; two sons, Craig (Cathy) Wheeler of Tyler, Texas, and Don Wheeler of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Jacob Wheeler, Aaron Wheeler, Ryan Wheeler, Jason Wheeler, Alan Wheeler, Jim Pinegar, Megan Pinegar, Jamie Renick, Taylor Collins and Rachel Welch; and nine great-grandchildren, Everest Wheeler, David Pinegar, Lindsey Pinegar, Kylee Renick, Lauryn Renick, Taryn Renick, Dane Renick, Davin Renick and Madison Renick. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Sam & Louella Gilliland.

Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 12, 2020 at Church of the Brethren in Garden City, KS. The service will be available Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. The family requests masks be worn at the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Church of the Brethren in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
