SCOTT CITY - Betty Mast, age 85, died August 18, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Aurora, CO. She was born in Garden City, KS on June 9, 1935, the daughter of Johnnie Hallmark and S. Lucille Henderson Hallmark. Betty was raised in Garden City. She married Chet Wishon in 1951 and they had three children: Mark, Richard and Robin. She married Leonard Coates in 1957 and they had four children: James, Annette, Lynette and Kenyon. In 1975, Betty married Harold Mast and moved to the Mast farm northwest of Scott City, Ks.
Betty worked as a nurse aide at St. Catherine’s Hospital in pediatrics and later worked as a Southwestern Bell telephone operator. She had many hobbies including needle point, crocheting, and collecting porcelain dolls.
Survivors include six children, Richard L. Coates of Scott City, KS.; Robin R. Crain of Aurora, CO.; James L. Coates and wife Jan Coates of Custer, SD.; A. Annette Coates of Garden City, KS.; V. Lynette Grissom of Garden City, KS, J. Kenyon Coates and wife Shellie Coates of Holcomb, KS.; 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Leon Mast, both her parents, and her son, Mark E. Coates, sister Dorothy Unruh, and brother Westley Hallmark.
A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church with Pastor Rodney Hopper in Scott City, KS on August 31st, 2020 at 10:30 am. Burial will follow the service at Scott City Cemetery.
