Susan M. Ortega, 63, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born July 2, 1956, in LaJunta, Colo., to Nick & Mary Enis (Villarreal) Hernandez.

Susan grew up in Ulysses, where she attended school and then attended Garden City Community College. She lived in Cimarron and has lived in Garden City since 2004. Susan worked for many years as a paraprofessional for the Cimarron and Garden City school districts. Susan enjoyed helping at the Garden City Family YMCA daycare, translating, teaching English, helping people become U.S. citizens, crocheting, puzzles, church activities and spending time with her grandchildren. She was first married to Rafael Cruz and later married Leonardo Ortega in 1996 in Cimarron.

Susan is survived by her five children, Cory Davila of Salina, John Davila of San Marcos, Texas, Mario Davila of Salina, Stephanie Cruz of Dodge City and Brandi Ortega of Garden City; two brothers, Frank Hernandez and Michael Hernandez, both of Ulysses; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonardo Ortega in 2004; parents; and son, Nick Davila.

A rosary will be held at 10 a.m. with a funeral mass following at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Cimarron Cemetery in Cimarron. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
