Lois J. Avalon, 71, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, at The Ranch House in Garden City. She was born Aug. 4, 1948, in Norfolk, Neb., the daughter of Vernol Anthony & Stella Olivia (Klein) Beckman.
Lois grew up in the Petersburg, Neb., area. She attended St. John’s Catholic School where she graduated from high school in 1968. Lois later worked at the hospital in Albion, Neb. She moved to southwest Kansas in 1980 living in Lakin, Deerfield and Garden City. A homemaker, Lois later worked for H&R Block before working at Walmart. After 18 years with Walmart, she retired in 2012. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City and she enjoyed knitting and quilting. On Aug. 22, 1970, she married Manuel Obieta Avalon in Petersburg, Neb.
Lois is survived by her husband, Manuel; four children, John Avalon of Holcomb, Amy Woods of Wichita, Russell Avalon of Papillion, Neb., and Earl Avalon of Garden City; five brothers, Dale Beckman of Petersburg, Neb., Paul Beckman of Elgin, Neb., Roger Beckman of Petersburg, Neb., Jim Beckman of Petersburg, Neb., and Tom Beckman of Norfolk, Neb.; two sisters, June Racely of Columbus, Neb., and Karen Meikle of Norfolk, Neb,; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling hours.
