Berniece E. Fry, 93, died on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on June 14, 1926, in McCook, Neb., to John and Zeta (Roberts) Fry.

Berniece grew up in Atwood and graduated with her bachelor's degree from the University of Denver in 1952.

In 1952, Berniece started teaching at Garden City High School, where she was also the Kayettes sponsor, junior class sponsor and later senior class sponsor. In 1954, when Garden City Junior College moved to the high school building, she started teaching for the college and the high school. At the college, she was the a guidance counselor and dean of girls along with the campus co-ed sponsor for the high school.

In 1962, she started teaching full-time for the college and was dean of women. She also taught the college business classes. When the new campus was built, she helped design the business classrooms. She retired in 1991 after 39 years of teaching in Garden City.

Berniece was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, Friends Of Lee Richardson Zoo, Finney County Historical Society, KARP, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority International and a life member of the National Education Association.

She is survived by several cousins and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant sister, Geraldine Fry.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Atwood. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home.
