Phyllis C. Wilson Geist Rowland, 86, died on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City. She was born in Wichita County on the Pleasant Valley farm to John F. and Beulah L. Heath Wilson, on Dec. 25, 1932.
Phyllis attended a one-room school for eight years before attending WCCHS in Leoti. She married Gene Geist in 1950 and later divorced. Five children were born to this union. After her children were all in school, she attended Fort Hays State University, where she received a bachelor's and master's in English. She married Kenneth Rowland in 1978.
She was a longtime teacher, teaching in Scott County High School, St. John’s Military School and McPherson Junior High in McPherson, Prairie Hills Middle School in Hutchinson and memoir writing classes in Jacksonville, Fla.
Phyllis is survived by her two daughters, Susan Arnold and husband Neil of Winfield, Gina Ramsey and husband Craig of Scott City; one son, Shane Geist and Cindy of Scott City; two stepsons, Don Rowland and wife Gaye of Richardson, Texas, and Kent Rowland of Winfield; one brother, Fran Wilson and wife Jan of Kearney, Neb.; two sisters, Aleta Hastings and husband Lauerence of Wichita and Esther Walker of Ulysses; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Robin Geist-Wick; one son, Bill Geist; husband, Ken; and a special friend, Joe Beaver.
A memorial celebration service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Scott City. There will be no calling times. Memorials may be given to El Quartelejo Museum or City on a Hill, both of Scott City.
