Eileen Cox, 92, died on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019, at her home in Lakin. She was born on Nov. 3, 1926, in Neosho County to Virgil Ellsworth and Ruth Ann (Tarwater) Herrin.

She married Earl E. “Blackie” Cox on Feb. 25, 1951, at Rogers, Ark. He died on April 14, 2017.

Eileen attended Junior College in Chanute and Parsons and graduated from the Parsons Beauty Academy. She was a beautician in Parsons and taught school in Elsmore, Iola and St. Paul. After she and her husband moved to Lakin she did ironing and was a dray women, driving a truck for Santa Fe Railroad to deliver freight to local businesses from the train. She did two terms as a census taker 10 years apart for the federal government, drove a school bus, was a laundry aide at Kearny County Hospital and owned and operated Cox Fireworks for 40 years.

She was a member and past president of McAfee Stebbins VFW Auxiliary, Garden City Road Riders and Western Kansas Roadrunners Motorcycle Club.

She is survived by four children, Thomas Earl Cox and wife Michele of Pueblo West, Colo., Connie Jo Bryant of Lakin and Carthage, Mo., Marjorie Lynn Hendershot of Lakin and Jack Richard Cox and wife Tina of Peyton, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Kenneth Cox; one brother; one sister; great-grandson, James L. III; and granddaughter, Steph.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Lakin. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
