ULYSSES — Roberta H Brewer, 100, of Ulysses died July 3, 2019, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital. Roberta was born on May 30, 1919, at home on a small farm in Wamego, to Catherine Anastatia Brannick LaFontaine and Josiah Brown.
Roberta attended Emporia State Teachers College where she obtained her teaching certificate. At age 19, she accepted her first teaching position in Ulysses, where she taught seventh grade and music, coached the girl’s basketball team and met her future husband, a sixth-grade teacher named Marshall Brewer. They married on June 22, 1945, at the Presbyterian Church in Wamego. They worked together at Marshall's medical clinic for 40 years, with him seeing patients and performing surgery and her running the business office and accompanying him on house calls. In 1957, they adopted their own baby, six-week-old Marsha Ann.
She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Gough, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall in 2000.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the chapel at the Garnand Funeral Home, followed by a brief graveside funeral service and burial at the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 on Tuesday at the Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
