ULYSSES — Max Hiebert, 81, of Ulysses, died Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Feb. 6, 1938, in Dodge City to John and Edith (Mehl) Hiebert.
He grew up in the Turpin, Okla., area. He moved with his family to Ulysses and attended his junior and senior year and was a graduate of Grant County Rural High School.
He married Donna Wilkerson on Dec. 10, 1960, in Johnson City. They moved to Ulysses, where Max taught math and coached football, track and basketball. He was inducted into the Kansas Teacher’s Hall of Fame in 1997. Max and Donna moved to North Newton in 2015 and recently returned to Ulysses.
He is survived by his wife, of Ulysses; one daughter, Terri Cantrell of Ulysses; a brother, Arlis Hiebert of San Marcus, Texas; a stepbrother, Don Wiebe of Calgary Ontario, Canada; a stepsister, Loretta Jost of Aurora, Neb.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepbrother, Gary Wiebe; and a son, William John Hiebert.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Celebration Baptist Church in Ulysses. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
