R. Kent Nanninga, 79, died on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at The Cottages in Garden City.
He was born on May 16, 1939, at Dr. V.A. Leopold’s Hospital in Garden City, the son of Orville Vernon and Florence Lavone (Boots) Nanninga.
He married Carol Sullivan on June 10, 1967, in Garden City.
He graduated from Garden City High School in 1957 and the University of Kansas in 1962 with a degree in business. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
He joined the family business Western Motor Company, which he ran to retirement.
He was a member of St Dominic Catholic Church, St Dominic Men’s Choir, Southwind Country Club, Elks Lodge and was a board member of Fidelity State Bank and St Catherine Hospital. He enjoyed golfing, fly fishing, playing gin, KU Sports, playing the piano and his summer trips to the family cabin in Almont, Colo.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Nanninga of the home; son Troy and wife Dana Nanninga of Garden City; daughter Tara and husband Jeff Kesler of Plano, Texas; sister Cheryl A. Barker of Houston, Texas; and five grandchildren, Tristan Nanninga, Sydney Nanninga, Quincy Nanninga, Matthew Kesler and Emma Kesler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Wilda Lee Ladner; and brother John R. Nanninga.
Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday and funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, both at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
