Robert E. “Bobby” Griggs, 56, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Kindred Hospital in Denver. 

He was born Jan. 12, 1962, in Garden City, to Gene Griggs Sr. and Dorothy Castoe Griggs.

After graduating from Garden City High School in 1980, Mr. Griggs worked as a plumber for a short time. He then attended the police academy, where he graduated in 1990. He was immediately employed with the Finney County Sheriff Office. In 1996, he joined the Garden City Police Department, where he played an integral role in starting the K-9 program. This show of initiative earned him the second-ever officer of the year award and he was named Top Cop in February 1999. In 2002, he moved to Douglas County, Colo., to join the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, where he served as a deputy and a school resource officer. He was still active with the sheriff’s office until the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting, range shooting, and he especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include three children, Lyndsay (Josh) Plankenhorn of Garden City, Shaina (Eric) Wiens of Phillipsburg, and Brad Griggs of Garden City; his mother, Dorothy Griggs of Garden City; a brother, Gene Griggs Jr. of Garden City; a sister, Dixie Misemer of Florida; four grandchildren, Brayson Plankenhorn, Culden Plankenhorn, Ryder Plankenhorn and Cade Wiens; two nephews; and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Griggs Sr.; and a sister, Patty Jo Griggs.

Funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.  

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
