Gerardo “Lalo” Escalera Cervantes, 68, died Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at his home in Garden City. 

He was born Feb. 21, 1950, in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico, to Aristeo Escalera and Norberta Cervantes. 

A U.S. resident since 1972, Mr. Cervantes had worked at Atlas Galvanizing in Los Angeles for more than 20 years. After retiring, he moved to Garden City.

On May 10, 1980, he married Margarita Nunez Rodriguez. They later divorced. He later married Maria de Jesus Morales Amaya. She survives. Other survivors include his daughters, Margarita Medina-Escalera and Lupita Escalera Nunez, both of Garden City; his siblings, Manuel Escalera of Mexico City, Francisco Escalera of Bell Gardens, Calif., Javier Escalera of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, and Socorro Levingston of Riverside, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Antonio Escalera, Jose Escalera, Jesus Escalera, Lorenzo Escalera and Salvador Escalera. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
