John R. Acosta, 73, died Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 6, 1944, in Clovis, Calif., to Domingo and Angelina Bernal Acosta.
A Garden City resident since the late 1970s, Mr. Acosta worked for the Garden City Police Department for 28 years. He began working in 1982 as a communicator with the police department, later became the communications director and then moved over to the records division. He retired in December 2010. He also worked part time at Streeter Cleaners. He enjoyed socializing with his family and friends. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
On April 12, 1980, he married Lorraine A. Garcia in Denver. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Chris and wife Karen Garcia of Denver, and John Acosta and Thomas Acosta, both of Garden City; and three grandchildren, Alexis Garcia, Gabrial Garcia and Dade Acosta.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A vigil service and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted.
