Fatal accidents claim two area residents

A pair of separate fatal accidents occurred Friday morning in southwest Kansas.

In Finney County, Norma O. Santoyo, 40, Garden City, died at the scene of a two-vehicle accident five-miles south of Garden City on U.S. Highway 83 Friday morning.

Santoyo was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 83 in a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze, crossed the centerline and collided with a 2005 Kenworth semi, driven by Santiago Tena-Meza, 32, Garden City. Following the impact of both vehicles’ front driver’s side portions, Santoyo’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound ditch, while Tena-Mesa’s vehicle ended up in the southbound ditch.

Santoyo was not wearing a seat belt. Tena-Meza was wearing a seat belt and was transported to St. Catherine Hospital be private vehicle.

In Kearny County, Ronald J. Rindels, 62, Hugoton, died at the scene of a single-vehicle accident two miles south of Deerfield on Road 160 on Friday morning.

Rindels was traveling westbound on Road 160 when his 2002 Chevrolet Astro van left the roadway to the north. He over-corrected and the vehicle came back on to the roadway and then entered the south ditch, where the vehicle rolled and came to rest on its roof.

Rindels was not wearing a seat belt.
