GCCCA to follow GCCC’s lead

Garden City Career Connections Academy, formerly known as the Adult Learning Center, will follow Garden City Community College and have an extended spring break, with coursework resuming online on March 30.

The adult learners’ academy will continue to follow the GCCC’s schedule until further decisions are made by college leadership regarding the remainder of the spring semester.

GCCCA Director Hector Martinez said his instructors in both the General Education Development (GED) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are now working on and will continue working through the extended Spring Break period to utilize digital tools to transition coursework online. Some of those tools include the Aztec Learning System for GED, Burlington English for ESL, and the college’s Canvas management system, where applicable.

“It’s a good challenge for our instructors to connect with our students and learn more about 21-century technologies,” Martinez said. “They’re willing and working to make that happen.”

Martinez said the GCCCA comprises about 20 staff, including 14 part-time instructors, and serves about 250 adult students.

He added that his staff is already in communication with GCCCA students regarding both the schedule changes and delivery of instruction and will work with individual students to meet their needs.

In addition, GED and ESL classes that were scheduled at East Garden Village, Lot 466, will no longer begin in March 23.

The GCCCA will announce further information and dates on this outreach initiative when more information is available, Martinez said. For more information regarding GCCCA programs, call 620-276-9675.
