An 11-year-old boy was struck by a semi just south of downtown Garden City Friday evening when he fell from his bike into the roadway.
Emilio Corrales, 11, of Garden City was traveling southbound near Business Highway 83, riding his bike on the walkway portion of a bridge that allows the highway to cross the Arkansas River, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. At the same time, Robert Baldridge, 55, of Holcomb, was traveling northbound in a Peterbilt semi on the bridge.
Witnesses saw Corrales' bike drive off the bike path, causing him and the bike to fall into the northbound lane of the highway right in front of the semi, according to the KHP. The semi struck both the bike and Corrales and then came to a stop to help the boy.
Corrales was taken to Wesley Medical Center with a suspected serious injury, according to the KHP. Baldridge, had no apparent injuries.
