The YMCA of Southwest Kansas' Garden City branch will hold a grand opening of its Dome at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25.

The first 75 people to arrive will receive a Dome T-shirt. New members can join the Dome for only $25. Tours will be provided of the facility. The community is welcome to try the Dome free that day.

The community can also participate in a DUNK THE CEO!, where CEO Chad Knight will allow the public to pay $5 for a chance to dunk him in his suit. All proceeds will pay for a bench near the front entrance.

The Dome, a YMCA Activity Center, will feature three multipurpose courts, a walking/jogging track, a functional fitness area with a Queenax machine and several other pieces of fitness equipment. The back of the building will be set up with baseball/softball cages, pitching mounds and a soft toss/batting tee workout area.

“We are very excited to unveil our Dome to the community,” Knight said. “This Dome will be a hot spot for our youth and provide a great partnership with the school district. I believe everyone will be amazed about the size and scope of the Dome and everything it has to offer. I can’t wait to see activities in our Dome and people using the Queenax machine and the Dome filled.”

Stacy Castoe will serve as the Dome and operations director. Competitive youth leagues, sport specific training, functional fitness classes on the Queenax apparatus and all the current youth sports programs are planned at the new facility. All the YMCA teams will practice and play their games at the Dome. Kenneth Henderson will have its middle school teams use it for practices and games as well.

“Very pleased to see this project come together and looking forward to continuing our great relationship with the YMCA here at the Dome," said Steve Karlin, USD 457 superintendent.
